Current Position: Co-founder and Research Director at OpenAI

Introduction

Wojciech Zaremba (born November 30, 1988, in Kluczbork, Poland) is a Polish computer scientist and co-founder of OpenAI, one of the world’s leading artificial intelligence research organizations. Known for his pioneering work in deep learning, robotics, and AI programming models, Zaremba has played a key role in shaping modern artificial intelligence, including the creation of ChatGPT and Codex.

Early Life and Education

Zaremba grew up in Kluczbork, where he attended the Comprehensive School Complex. Due to his exceptional mathematical abilities, he received individual instruction in mathematics. In 2007, he represented Poland at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Vietnam, earning a silver medal. During his school years, he was also a scholar of the National Children’s Fund, an organization supporting gifted youth in Poland.

He pursued mathematics and computer science at the University of Warsaw and École Polytechnique, earning:

  • B.Sc. in Mathematics (2010, University of Warsaw)
  • B.Sc. in Computer Science (2012, University of Warsaw)
  • M.Sc. in Mathematics (2012, University of Warsaw)

Later, he continued his academic journey at New York University, where he conducted research under the supervision of Yann LeCun and Rob Fergus. His doctoral dissertation, titled “Learning Algorithms from Data,” explored advanced concepts in machine learning. In 2016, he received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from NYU.

Professional Career

Zaremba’s professional career began during his undergraduate studies, when he interned at NVIDIA, contributing to projects related to computational learning and GPU-based systems.

During his doctoral studies, he worked for two of the most influential AI research divisions in the world:

  • Google Brain, where he co-authored the widely cited paper “Intriguing Properties of Neural Networks,” exploring the vulnerabilities and interpretability of deep learning models.
  • Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR), where he continued to study large-scale neural architectures and optimization methods.

In 2015, together with Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Reid Hoffman, and Peter Thiel, Wojciech Zaremba co-founded OpenAI, an organization established to advance and democratize artificial intelligence in a safe and beneficial way for humanity.

Within OpenAI, Zaremba initially led the robotics research team, focusing on reinforcement learning and robotic manipulation tasks. Later, he became the head of the Codex project, which powers GitHub Copilot, a coding assistant capable of translating natural language into code. He also contributed to the development of the GPT series, including ChatGPT, one of the most widely used AI systems in the world.

Today, Zaremba directs research at OpenAI in areas such as:

  • Reinforcement learning
  • Active learning
  • Large-scale model training and optimization
  • AI safety and interpretability

He is known for combining scientific curiosity with practical engineering and ethical awareness.

Zaremba currently resides in San Francisco, California.

Zaremba salary and net worth

  • According to a U.S. nonprofit tax filing (Form 990) for OpenAI, Wojciech Zaremba’s compensation as a “Research Engineer / Key Employee” was listed as $508,584.
  • Earlier reporting suggests that OpenAI pays top researchers very high salaries (some exceeding $1 million) to attract leading talent.
  • In an interview, Zaremba himself said that some of the job offers he declined from large tech companies were “borderline crazy” in monetary terms.

So, while we have a documented salary figure (≈ $508,584) from tax filings, any estimate of net worth would be speculative — it would depend on private investments, equity, other assets, and so forth.

Awards and Honors

  • Silver Medal – 48th International Mathematical Olympiad (Vietnam, 2007)
  • Google PhD Fellowship in Machine Learning (2015)
  • Forbes Poland “30 Under 30” – Recognized as one of the most talented young Poles (2017)

Selected Contributions

  • Learning Algorithms from Data (Ph.D. Dissertation, NYU, 2016)
  • Intriguing Properties of Neural Networks (Google Brain, 2013)
  • Co-founder and lead researcher at OpenAI (since 2015)
  • Leadership of OpenAI Robotics and Codex teams
  • Key contributor to the development of ChatGPT and Copilot

Legacy

Wojciech Zaremba is regarded as one of the most influential Polish computer scientists of his generation. His work bridges academia and industry, showing how theoretical insights in deep learning can lead to transformative real-world technologies. As a co-founder of OpenAI, his vision continues to shape the ethical and technological foundations of artificial intelligence.
